All things happen
All things happen.
A guy had something stolen from him. While he was narrating his ordeal, someone asked “have you been paying your tithe?” Point taken – when you pay your tithe, bad things don’t happen to you. Fast-forward to days later, the questioner had something stolen. It was now the turn of the first victim to ask (don’t smile) “have you been paying your tithe?” Point taken – “tithers” are not free from the daily sad occurrences.
We seem to reduce the glorious acts of God into simple mathematical equations. When you do good things, happy events will come your way. This is expressed thus; GOOD PERSON = HAPPY EVENTS. The reverse is also expressed thus; BAD PERSON = SAD EVENTS.
This was the same logic that the friends of Job (Eliphaz, Bildad and Zophar) preached at Job with. They claimed Job had indulged in certain sins and God was now punishing him in the open.
Job cried out to God to vindicate him. In his despair, he almost walked the precipice of asserting his righteousness over God’s righteousness (Job 31:35-37, 32:2).
Elihu, the young man, who spoke as a true prophet of God started Job along the lines of a finer theology, the theology of the Sovereignty of God. Throughout Elihu’s discourse, Job quietly listened, learning from the youth that God is Master over all He has created.
Elihu prepared the way for God to speak clearly to Job. He called Job to the approaching thunder, which acted as the Herald for God (Job 37:1,2, 38:1).
Bad things happen to good people because God is Sovereign over all He has created. He chooses what happens according to the plans in His heart. All He does are for His glory sake and He defines how our lives bring Him glory.
God, give me the patience to enjoy You in all seasons of life, in the happy events and in the sad events.
